Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, with the winter holidays following closely behind. Soon our offices will be stocked with seasonal treats and our family gatherings will be centered among tables of festive food. Like many of us, in January you may find yourself wondering why your pants have shrunk or your scale seems to be malfunctioning. You may also come to the conclusion that perhaps you indulged in one too many slices of pie during the holidays. So how do we avoid the dreaded “holiday bulge”?
While completely abstaining from holiday spreads would help prevent weight gain, that’s not always practical or easy to do at parties and family gatherings. How, then, can we indulge without completely blowing our diets? The key is moderation and balance. The following tips will help you navigate the cornucopia of goodies this holiday season and also help keep you in your skinny jeans.
• Think in terms of “calories in vs. calories out”. There are websites dedicated to calorie counting, where you can log your food and exercise throughout the day. The website will then calculate your calorie intake vs. calories burned. While it may not prevent you from going for that second helping of mashed potatoes, at least you’ll know where you stand. https://caloriecount.about.com/cc/account/login.php.
• Eat a healthy snack before going to a party. Showing up hungry is a surefire way to overeat.
• If you’re concerned about overeating, make one trip to the buffet table and then position yourself as far away from the table as possible.
• At the buffet table, load up on fresh fruits and veggies, but avoid creamy dips and sauces.
• Limit alcohol intake and stay away from the eggnog! There are a lot of sneaky calories in alcoholic beverages. Try turning your drink into a “spritzer”, by filling a glass with ice, adding a couple of ounces of wine, and filling the rest of the glass with club soda. You’ll cut the calories in half!
• If you have a choice between using a dinner plate or a salad plate, use the salad plate. You’ll eat a lot less that way.
• Choose your splurges wisely and make adjustments when you can. For example, if you know you’re going to have a slice of Grandma’s famous apple pie tonight, make an adjustment to your diet during the day, such as having a salad for lunch instead of a sandwich and chips.
• When you feel satisfied, chew on a piece of minty gum. It will curb your appetite and make you less likely to continue snacking.
